{"id":41722,"date":"2017-07-14T13:30:36","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T11:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newparadigm.schillerinstitute.com\/?p=41722\/"},"modified":"2017-08-14T15:50:36","modified_gmt":"2017-08-14T13:50:36","slug":"symposium-aesthetic-education-humanity-music-concluding-event-two-day-tribute-sylvia-olden-lee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/2.schillermeet.de\/ru\/blog\/2017\/07\/14\/symposium-aesthetic-education-humanity-music-concluding-event-two-day-tribute-sylvia-olden-lee\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium:  &#8220;The Aesthetic Education of Humanity Through Music&#8221; Concluding Event of Two Day Tribute to Sylvia Olden Lee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>On Friday, June 30, 2017, at the Bruno Walter Auditorium of the New York Library for the Performing Arts, near Lincoln Center, a historic gathering of great musicians and associates of Sylvia Olden Lee,\u00a0 from different generations, backgrounds and\u00a0 accomplishment took place to discuss \u201cThe Aesthetic Education of Humanity Through Music.\u201d The symposium was the second event of a two day \u201cTribute to Sylvia Olden Lee, Master Musician and Teacher,\u201d sponsored by the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture, the Schiller Institute and the Harlem Opera Theater.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"one-half\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/schillerinstitute.org\/highlite\/2017\/0629-ny-sylvia\/program.html\" target=\"_blank\">Tribute commenced at Carnegie Hall<\/a>\u00a0on the evening of June 29 with a Classical concert of African-American Spirituals, (performed with both solo and choral singers) and works of Giuseppe Verdi, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Gaetano Donizetti.\u00a0The audience of 2,100 was deeply moved by the quality of\u00a0<em>agap\u0113<\/em>brought forth by the soloists, by the speeches of\u00a0 those close to the immortal Sylvia Olden Lee, as well as the beauty of the choral performances.\u00a0Rarely does a \u201ccommunity chorus\u201d reach the stage of Carnegie Hall, let alone receive standing ovations, but the Sylvia Olden Lee Centennial Choir, comprised of four Schiller Institute New York Choruses (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey), the Boston and Northern Virginia Schiller Institute Choruses, and the Convent Avenue Baptist Church Chancel Choir, sung with proper voice-placement at the \u201cVerdi tuning\u201d (A=432 Hz) and was inspired, sensing that Mrs. Lee was indeed present there.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"one-half last\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-41778\" src=\"http:\/\/newparadigm.schillerinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/COVER-FRONT20170629-sylvia-final_04.jpg\" alt=\"COVER-FRONT20170629-sylvia-final_04\" width=\"340\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/2.schillermeet.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/COVER-FRONT20170629-sylvia-final_04.jpg 453w, https:\/\/2.schillermeet.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/COVER-FRONT20170629-sylvia-final_04-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/div><div class=\"clear\"><\/div><\/p>\n<div class=\"toggle-box\"><button class=\"toggle-title\" onclick=\"var d=document.getElementById('toggle-6a3f0f0c0a151');d.style.display=d.style.display==='none'?'block':'none';\">read more<\/button><div class=\"toggle-content\" id=\"toggle-6a3f0f0c0a151\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The following day\u2019s Symposium, on the theme \u201cCalling All Teachers and Other Lovers of Wisdom: The Aesthetic Education of Humanity through Music,\u201d was\u00a0moderated by Dennis Speed\u00a0of the Schiller Institute. The first session opened with\u00a0remarks from Lynn Yen, Executive Director of the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture, after which\u00a0selected members of the Sylvia Lee Centennial Chorus sang\u00a0Hall Johnson\u2019s arrangement of \u201cI\u2019ll Never Turn Back No More,\u201d directed by Diane Sare, with soloists Frank Mathis, baritone\u00a0and Michelle Fuchs, soprano.\u00a0Soprano Gudrun B\u00fchler\u00a0followed with Desdemona\u2019s aria from Verdi\u2019s\u00a0<em>Otello<\/em>, accompanied by Richard Alston on the piano.\u00a0Music Director Sigersonshowed the audience the two pianos on the stage, one tuned to the Verdi A=432 Hz, and the other tuned to A=441 Hz. The audience of musicians, educators, and students would also get to hear singers on each piano, comparing the different tunings. He then introduced the videos to the gathering.<\/p>\n<p>Before introducing Carmela Altamura, founder of the Altamura Center for the Performing Arts and the Altamura-Caruso competition, Sigerson showed a 1988 Schiller Institute video from Casa Verdi in Milan, with baritone Piero Cappuccilli demonstrating the superiority of the Verdi Tuning.\u00a0Maestra Altamuraspoke of her work, and then coached three of her students,\u00a0tenor Mauricio Trejo,\u00a0soprano Jennifer Adams, and\u00a0baritone Gustavo Ahualli\u00a0on aspects of singing correctly, and creating\u00a0<em>bel canto<\/em>\u00a0tone. The difference between the higher tuning and the proper tuning was especially evident in the soprano\u2019s high notes in Oscar\u2019s aria \u201cSaper vorreste\u201d from Verdi\u2019s\u00a0<em>Un ballo in maschera<\/em>. However, in the baritone\u2019s example, which he sang first at the 440 Hz and then at 432 Hz tuning, it was the tone color and the warmer, rounder quality that was audible, as well as the proper register shift.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief intermission,\u00a0tenor Reginald Bouknightand pianist Richard Alston presented the first song of Beethoven&#8217;s song cycle, \u201cAn die ferne Geliebte.\u201d\u00a0Maestro Tony Morss\u00a0spoke on the history of musical tuning and the Schiller Institute\u2019s tuning initiative, followed by\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/schillerinstitute.org\/highlite\/2017\/0629-ny-sylvia\/estes-speed.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>dialogue with Simon Estes<\/strong><\/a>.
