Kennedy gave a speech at Washington, D.C.\u2019s American University, eight months after the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The world had just barely avoided destroying itself in a thermonuclear war. Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave.
