It will come out of the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. The largest amount, $30 million, will go to Yemen. The remaining funds will cover food aid to parts of Nigeria, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">World Food Program Director David Beasley and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Director Mark Lowcock, who made the announcement, also wrote a joint opinion column Nov.\u00a017 that was published by\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>\u00a0of London, titled, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/story\/un-emergency-funding-released-help-stave-famine-high-risk-countries\">\u201cWe\u2019ve Averted Famine in the Past \u2014 We Must Do It Again.\u201d<\/a> They began, \u201cHumankind\u2019s greatest success was to consign famine to history,\u201d but now it is back, and this is \u201cheart wrenching and obscene.\u201d They said, \u201cThe world has been understandably preoccupied with COVID-19, but this must not distract us from the bigger killer.\u201d They called for action. \u201cDo nothing and it will be the catalyst for the grand reversal \u2014 the avoidable unravelling of decades of progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their op-ed states: \u201cThe UN\u2019s COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan requires $10 billion. A drop in the ocean compared to the $12 trillion stimulus packages of wealthy nations or the $8 trillion collective net worth of the world\u2019s 2,000 billionaires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Yemen in particular, they point out, \u201cCountries in the region and beyond should collaborate to finance the Yemen relief effort, stabilize the shattered economy, support longer-term development and bring pressure to bear on the warring parties to silence the guns and make peace.\u201d Beasley and Lowcock conclude, \u201cFamines are a stain on humanity.
